Howl-o-ween at the Dunes

Boy #2 is still young enough to enjoy Halloween camping.  The Indiana Dunes State Park is a really nice park BUT there are lots of rules on the beach and the lake so we only visit for Halloween.  We prefer Michigan for the summer and beach going.  Halloween works perfectly, the kids are in school so this makes for an easy trip on a Friday afternoon.

The weekend before Halloween is the annual Halloween weekend.  I let boy #2 invite 2 friends this year, and of course, the teenager is way too cool for Halloween camping and hanging out with three 10 year olds.  The park has several activities, including trick or treating and campsite decorating.  Last year we did everything, owl banding, organized hikes, hiked over the dunes to the beach and when it got cold at night we watched Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein inside.  We didn't partake in any of that, the boys were busy exploring on their own so we missed almost all of that.  It was still a fun camping trip, they probably would have enjoyed all of the parks programs but I guess the truth was I just didn't want to chase them down.  I don't have any pictures either, they were never around long enough to take any good pictures!

Next year, our youngest will be in 6th grade.  This very well could have been the last Halloween camping trip.  This year for Halloween, the teenager went to the Florida Georgia Line concert and the husband and I went to Wisconsin so he could fish for Brown Trout.  Halloween has basically become a non-event at my house.  Next year Halloween will be on a Friday!  Maybe it will be a different story.  Who knows.  The trailer is winterized now, it will be 7 months before we get it out again.  7 months!  7 months of cold, grey, damp, snowy and icy weather.  I. hate. winter.
